Kennan Goodman’s Biography

Kennan Goodman is among the most creative emerging soloists in the world of music.  Every time he plays a note, a wonderful immersion of sound and energy is created from his horn and his soul.  He represents everything one could hope for in a jazz trumpeter: patience, thoughtfulness, love, passion, imagination, vitality, fire, versatility, hope, reflection, goodness and courage.  Blessed with an authentic tone, an original approach and a melodic tapestry, Kennan’s sound immediately pays tribute to the trumpet greats Louis Armstrong, John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie and Miles Davis while both soothing and captivating listeners with a “silent storm” of beauty and tension.

Kennan played throughout high school performing in concert, jazz, brass, marching and symphonic bands.  He was selected among Georgia's elite young musicians to play 1st trumpet in the Atlanta Olympic Concert Band for Atlanta Olympic Committee events as well as the Atlanta Olympic Band that performed in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games.  Kennan also enjoyed a wonderful experience performing in the 1996 Paralympic Gospel Choir led by Kirk Franklin.

His musical experiences since then have included numerous performance opportunities in bands with many of the greatest and most renowned musicians in the world.  As a primary soloist and most often lead trumpeter of the Clark Atlanta University Jazz Orchestra led by James Patterson, he had the pleasure of performing the jazz suite Gillespiana with composer Lalo Schifrin and jazz legends Jon Faddis, Paquito D’Rivera, Rufus Reid and Ignacio Berroa.  He also made three European tours with the orchestra, performing in the North Sea Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival, Vienne Jazz Festival and Monteux Jazz Festival.  With the orchestra, he also performed with James Moody, Wynton Marsalis, Ernestine Anderson, Ted Levy, Regina Carter, George Bohannon, Panama Francis and a recording session with Mor Thiam.  With the orchestra, he has also opened for

Wynton Marsalis, Kirk Whalum, Nancy Wilson, Roberta Flack, Patti Austin and Roy Ayers

As a primary soloist and frequent lead trumpeter of the Duke University Jazz Ensemble and the Paul Jeffrey Quintet, he performed in big band and jazz combo settings with Clifton Anderson, Ray Bryant, George Cables, John Orr, John Hicks, Elise Wood, Winard Harper, Chevy Chase, Charles Tolliver, Joanne Brackeen, Jimmy Greene, Derrick Gardner, James Spaulding.and Winston Byrd.  He also assisted in mentoring jazz clinic students at the Bud Powell Center.

Kennan later performed as the trumpeter and a primary soloist in the Seven Kindred Spirits band in Greenville, SC led by Jesse Madden. As a member of the band, Kennan recorded a CD entitled Jesus Is By My Side, opened for ATL and John Scofield and played in three performances organized by Jesse Jackson including one with performances by Robert Flack, John Legend, Willie Nelson and Stevie Wonder.

As a primary soloist and often lead trumpeter in the big band led by former James Brown Band Musical Director Tyrone Jefferson named A Sign of the Times (ASOTT), Kennan has performed in several ensembles performing a wide array of musical genres including blues, hip hop, latin, jazz, pop, R&B and swing. As a part of ASOTT, he has worked regular party, festival and conference gigs and has participated in the recording of several CDs, including a 2007 recording for Martha High. In ASOTT, he has also performed with artists such as Carla Cook, Fra Fra Sound and Fred Wesley, and has opened for Jennifer Holliday.

In addition to leading the Kennan Goodman Jazztet, Kennan has performed regularly the Chris Keller Trio, Common Ground led by Carl Ratliff, The Jazz Disciples led by Letron Brantley, the Calvin Edwards Band, and the Toni Tupponce Ensemble.

A beautiful rendition of a timeless classic, Silent Night performed by the Kennan Goodman Jazztet is a wonderful tribute in honor of the birth of Jesus Christ.  Kennan's full length albums have included an eclectic blending of jazz, new age and electronica.  The results have proven remarkable in his first album Love Solace.  The follow up to Love Solace is a three volume work entitled the Love Solaria Series with includes the current releases Love Solaria, Vol.1 Duplicity and Love Solaria, Vol. 2: Light Time.   Enriched with a heavy dose of boundless creativity and passionate improvisation, Kennan has coupled hypnotic rhythms and ambient textures into a unique pallet which creates new musical pathways and possibilities to be explored.  These paradigms have been interwoven into a collaborative background for his lyrical and radiant trumpet style.  This has allowed him to craft works expressing themes of light, unity and love which are qualities that he hopes our world will embrace.

Kennan believes that "Music is a precious gift for all of mankind to cherish and enjoy together."  This is what drives Kennan to actively seek to enrich the lives of others through his musical works.
